Each year, thousands of women are diagnosed with breast cancer and embark on one of the most difficult journeys a woman can face. Many times, she will require a mastectomy or lumpectomy to beat breast cancer, but the surgery may leave her feeling damaged with a constant reminder of her fight. Breast reconstruction with Dr. Thornton can help you overcome breast cancer by giving you back the feminine figure that you deserve.
One of the first steps for patients diagnosed with breast cancer is to find the correct team of doctors, nurses and support staff to guide the patient through this journey. Dr. Thornton is the liaison in Plastic Surgery to Norton Healthcare’s National Accreditation Program for Breast Center (NAPBC). He takes part in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings to review the needs of breast cancer patients from surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and through survivorship. “Teaming Up” provides the best care and outcomes to patients based on their individual cancer. This includes Nipple Sparring Mastectomy with reconstruction, one stage or direct to implant reconstruction, or oncoplastic reconstruction.
If you have recently undergone a mastectomy on one or both of your breasts, or are planning to have surgery after a recent diagnosis of breast, you may be a good candidate for breast reconstruction. Reconstructive breast surgery can help to restore size, shape, and appearance of your breasts that have been altered due to a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Breast reconstruction can be both a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure for breast cancer survivors as it symbolizes her victory over the disease that she battled.
Each breast reconstruction procedure will be different from woman to woman. Dr. Thornton focuses on breast reconstruction with implants, but he will carefully analyze your condition and recommend a treatment plan that will work best for you.
Dr. Thornton’s dedication to the breast cancer patients have led him to be on the Board of Directors of the Louisville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Foundation, the only plastic surgeon in the region to take part in a National Trial using the Aeroform Tissue Expander and a member of a National Breast Advisory Board where he collaborates with a leading manufacturer of breast implants to offer better reconstruction choices for all breast cancer patients.
